Evaluation of ‘Promoting the conversion of livestock farming from 2024 to 2030 – Investment projects’

Objectives

The DLG, together with the IfLS Beratung und Projekte GmbH and INFO GmbH, is investigating the impact of the ‘Conversion of Animal Husbandry’ subsidy. The subsidy initially focuses on pig farms. The aim of the evaluation is to assess the direct and indirect effects on pig farms, affected economic sectors and the economy as a whole. It will also examine whether the subsidy is a suitable instrument for improving animal welfare. Another focus is on how the subsidy changes society's acceptance of agricultural animal husbandry. To this end, farms – with and without subsidies – and citizens are being surveyed.

The background to this is that a corresponding subsidy guideline from the BMLEH came into force on 1 March 2024 and, together with other measures, is intended to contribute to the restructuring of agricultural animal husbandry in Germany towards greater animal welfare, as agreed in the 2021 coalition agreement.

The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (BMLEH) on the basis of a resolution passed by the German Bundestag.
