KOMBI

Collective models for promoting biodiversity

Background

Agriculture plays a key role in shaping the landscape and thus influences the species that live in it. Their diversity is the basis of a healthy ecosystem and makes productive agriculture possible in the first place. A practicable and sustainable agricultural policy is therefore needed that effectively combines the use and protection of the agricultural landscape.

The KOMBI joint project is pursuing a new approach to bring agriculture and biodiversity conservation together in Germany: Farmers in a region and experienced nature conservation advisors join forces. They plan, develop and apply for agricultural nature conservation measures together and across farms.

Objectives

The collaborative KOMBI approach is intended to make agricultural nature conservation and funding more effective and efficient. In the KOMBI, measures are coordinated within the landscape and connected with each other in order to better achieve nature conservation goals. At the same time, collaborative implementation reduces the bureaucratic burden on farms and helps to diffuse risks within the community. It creates more reliability and flexibility and makes environmental protection attractive as a branch of agricultural production. The commitment of the farms to agricultural nature conservation is also made more visible through the joint measures in the KOMBI.

Methods

Farmers and nature conservation stakeholders are joining forces in four model regions in Germany. Together, they plan and implement agricultural nature conservation measures in their region. At the same time, the project is monitored from an agro-ecological, agro-economic and socio-economic perspective and its effects are assessed.

Expected results

Individual approaches for cooperative models are to be developed and implemented in the model regions. Based on the scientific results, recommendations for practice and policy will be defined that can contribute to the continuity of the models.
