Sustainable Packaging Assessment - SPA

Practical methodology for the holistic and systematic sustainability assessment of food packaging

Objectives

The ‘Sustainable Packaging Assessment - SPA’ project aims to develop a practical methodology for the holistic and systematic sustainability assessment of food packaging in order to optimise the sustainability of food packaging along the entire value chain. Environmental, economic and social aspects of the sustainability of food packaging are considered. Packaging functionality also plays an important role: Food should be packaged with as much packaging as necessary and as little as possible in order to effectively protect the food and thus avoid food wastage. A certification system is being developed together with the DLG. In future, a corresponding label on the sustainability of packaging will inform consumers and support them in making more sustainable purchasing decisions.
