EPIC-Shift

Independent, solid knowledge base on the sustainability of novel foods based on alternative proteins

Objectives

The EPIC-SHIFT project aims to provide an independent, solid knowledge base on the sustainability of novel foods based on alternative proteins (NFAP) as options for protein diversification for human consumption. These proteins are derived from insects, fungi, algae, bacteria, and agricultural by-products. The goal is to make EU food systems more sustainable and equitable by developing and integrating these novel protein sources. The project includes the creation of a knowledge hub for alternative proteins, the formulation of strategies based on opportunities and risks, the provision of a multidimensional and integrated impact analysis, and the assessment of the market potential of NFAP. By applying a food systems thinking approach and a multi-actor approach, the project will comprehensively examine the various dimensions of the impacts of NFAP on the environment, economy, and society and provide recommendations for sustainable integration into EU food systems.
